“MELBA’S KITCHEN big band brings recipes for romance in their special Valentine’s Night show - “Cookin’ With Love.” The all women big band celebrates Black musical geniuses MELBA LISTON, MARY LOU WILLIAMS, and their friends in a love letter to the community. It’s a combination concert and your chance to dance on one of the friendliest floors in the Bay Area.
MELBA’S KITCHEN takes a deep dive into the sophisticated and soulful compositions and arrangements of Liston and Williams, jazz giants who accomplished so much, yet were recognized in such low proportion to what they contributed. For this special Valentine’s event, the emphasis is on romance, and the big tent for all the kinds of love.
And, when the doors open at 7:00, San Francisco’s renowned “Ambassador of Swing” CHAD KUBO leads a free swing dance lesson to whet your appetite.
MELBA’S KITCHEN has garnered enthusiastic reception from their appearances at venues including SFJAZZ Miner Auditorium, YOSHI’S, and the de Young Museum. The band exudes fierce gratitude for the music and creates a signature atmosphere of “kindness, joy, political action, and fun.” As jazz professor Dee Spencer says, “They are astonishing…They are so swinging.”
Whether you’re coming with your romantic other, solo, or with a bunch of friends, “Cookin’ With Love” this Valentine’s Night at The Freight will put love in your heart, a swing in your step, and the deliciousness of women in jazz in your soul. Come on and see what’s cookin’!”
