CoCo and Clotilda
Clotilda is the last known slave ship to bring captives from the African continent to what is now known as the United States.
It landed in 1860 in Mobile Bay, Alabama with 110 people aboard. It was burned and sunk to hide evidence of its existence and to avoid prosecution as there was a federal ban in place since 1807 on importing people from Africa to be enslaved.
Some Descendants live in Africatown.
Now fast forward to 2024 where I met Coco, aka Clotiel Young who was named after the ship and has a relic to share. More to come.
